The number of shareholder proposals at Canadian companies has risen significantly since the beginning of the decade, indicating a sustained level of investor interest in engaging with boards and executives over key issues and concerns. At the same time, shareholder proposal topics and areas of focus have shifted meaningfully from one year to the next.
ISS-Corporate examined shareholder proposal activity at S&P/TSX Composite issuers from 2020 through May 2026, to help corporate issuers identify trends in proposal volume, focus and support.

- Key Insights: In recent years, the focus of shareholder proposals shifted from Environmental and Social themes to Governance oversight. While environmental proposals remain robust, they are now more likely to target the governance and accountability part of the equation.
